Brave Little Bear: The inspirational story of a teenage mother.

I was 16 years old and the oldest of three children. My family lived in middle class, suburban Melbourne. I went to a private, catholic, secondary college, and attended church with my mum, dad, brother and sister every Sunday.

I had a boyfriend, Dave. He went to the local state school in the area.

After about six months of going out, we had sex, we were 16. I couldn't believe I'd done it. I was the last person that anyone would think would have sex, it went against all of my morals and personality. I was always known as a 'good girl'.

The scariest thing was that the condom broke and I didn't get my period when it was due. Soon I found out I was pregnant. I felt so scared and lost. When I told my family and friends, I felt so much judgement from many of them.

Amongst all of the turbulence and turmoil, I knew deep inside that I was going to have my baby and be the best mum I could be.

I held a perseverance and determination which I hoped would enable me to finish my education, while not compromising my role of a mother. I looked for inspiration from someone who had been down this path, and after searching through many book stores could find nothing. I then decided that one day if I could be a great mum and finish my education that I would write a book, for other young women facing the situation of unexpected pregnancy. Nine years later, I have written the book I dreamed of finding many years ago. 'Brave Little Bear,' follows my struggles and joys of motherhood, from the moment of conception to 13 years on. It tells of my loss of friends, and later, my boyfriend. It shows the perseverance I maintained as I studied through high school exams, complete with night feeds and the physical demands of motherhood. However throughout all of this, I maintained that my most important role was being that of a mother, even as a teenager.

I have written this book hoping that it will bring a message of inspiration, hope and perseverance to women facing unexpected pregnancy and motherhood. They will see that their future can be filled with aspirations and dreams for themselves, and now, their new child. Life is the key. Live it well. Dream big, live big and succeed big. It certainly is possible, even in the face of adversity. Life is here for us to live. Have a wonderful future in living it well.
